Lady Gaga On Being Named MTV News’ Woman Of The Year

MTV.com: No one had a bigger 2009 than Lady Gaga. Her hits were omnipresent. Her tours legendary. Her television appearances, well, they were definitely water-cooler material. And that’s saying nothing about her outfits, her photo spreads or her art. So it was no surprise that last week, MTV News named her Woman of the Year.

On Saturday — hours before her triumphant Monster Ball tour stop in San Diego — we sat down with the reigning princess of pop to talk about the year that was, the year that will be (from the sound of things, she’s not planning on resting in 2010) and what the Woman of the Year honor meant to her. Turns out, it meant an awful lot.

“It means everything,” Gaga said. “I’m not only flattered but really excited. It makes me want to work harder, make better videos and better shows and better music all the time. I really appreciate all the love MTV has shown me, and the support. My performance at the VMAs, for me, was a turning point artistically, and I appreciated that you guys supported me so much.”

And speaking of that blood-soaked, metaphor-heavy Video Music Awards performance (you remember it — the one where she was crushed by a chandelier, gushed gallons of blood and ultimately ascended to heaven?), Gaga counts it as one of her high points of 2009, not only because it set the stage for her current incarnation (the so-called “Fame Monster”), but because it was something she’d been dreaming about for years.

“I always dreamed about being a performer on the MTV awards. … More importantly, I wanted to be a performer, and I wanted my VMA performance to be my groundbreaking, life-changing performance,” she said. “So everything that I’d been working on was leading up to that moment, and then after that I gave birth to this new album, The Fame Monster. It was an amazing moment for me.”

She made a small boo boo a few times and pulled a Britney on us, calling us “San Jose”. The massive crowd actually counted to three during a small break in songs (right be Aljeandro) and screamed “San Diego” as loud as we could. Later, through tears in her eyes she apologized for her blunder. Obviously, we forgave her. She did not sing “Fashion” or her “non-album track” but it didn’t matter, you were too entranced by what was happening on stage to even care. “And though the show was quite a spectacle — lights! smoke! costume changes! — it was Gaga’s graciousness that made the crowd forgive the fact that at three different times during her set, she mistakenly addressed the crowd as “San Jose,” a city some 500 miles to the north. Later in the set, she apologized for the mistake, explaining that just as she was about to go onstage, she was told that the show was taking place in San Jose. The crowd cheered wildly, and all was forgiven. Of course, it helped matters that, at this point, Gaga had spent the better part of an hour positively pouring herself into every note, dance step and barely there costume. Showmanship goes a long way, after all. It was an ambitious, conceptual show, and, at nearly two full hours, it was a decidedly workmanlike effort, too. Gaga gave everything she had, and the crowd — gay and straight, young and old, all dressed in their Gaga-est getups (bubbles, feathers, lightning-bolt eye makeup and more than a few towering crowns) — matched her effort and intensity, screaming loudly, clapping thunderously, and singing along obediently.”

“The Lady Gaga show I attended last night in San Diego was amazing. My friends and I waited in line the night before for over 24 hours and after seeing the show it was totally worth it. From the costumes to the dancers, and of course Gaga’s great ability to put on a damn good show, we all had an awesome time. She sounds amazing in videos, but in real life she sounds 1000x better. She is the best performer ever, and I know that whenever she’s in Vegas again, I’ll be at the show. Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance” is the final number one track of this decade. In its fourth week at the summit the song grows up another 8% to 409,000 points, more than enough to keep this place well into the next year. The nearest rival is Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”, which jumps at the second place after a 7% increase to 303,000 points.

Albums chart
After an 11% sales increase to 1,161,000 copies Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream keeps a third week far away from the competitiors at the summit of the global album chart. On the year-to-date list, I Dreamed A Dream has a total of 3,492,000 copies, Lady Gaga’s The Fame achieved so far 4,983,000 copies. Now there are only two more weeks until the completion of the year-end chart. It will be an exciting battle for the top spot, both albums could reach more than 5,5 million sales. The Fame climbs one slot at No. 3 this week, with a huge 44% growth to 348,000 copies sold.

Lady Gaga: MTV News’ Woman Of The Year!

It’s been a big year for Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears, but there’s not much question that 2009 was Lady Gaga’s year. New York native Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta began the year as a hot hopeful and will end it as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. And there’s no one who challenged, provoked, entertained and, well, titillated us over the past 12 months quite like she has.

Her debut album, The Fame, was released on October 30, 2008, but MTV News was on the case early, and when we spoke with her four months earlier, her vision was clear even then.

“What has been lost in pop music these days is the combination of the visual and the imagery of the artist, along with the music — and both are just as important,” she said. “When I’m writing music, I’m thinking about the clothes I want to wear onstage. It’s all about everything altogether — performance art, pop performance art, fashion. For me, it’s everything coming together and being a real story that will bring back the super-fan. I want to bring that back. I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us.”

And it’s all come true (well, except maybe the licking part): Gaga truly made her mark in 2009 as the most remarkable pop star — and possibly the most memorable fashion figure — to come along in many, many years. She has proven herself to be both a songwriter and musician of unusual talent, — thanks in no small part to her primary producer/co-writer RedOne, whose pumping beats and soaring synthesizers drive many of her best songs — and a media-savvy public figure of equal skill. She’s both a classic pop star and one very much of the moment: Her music is dance-pop in format, but with a pop flair that stretches across many different genres and generations. Her message is provocative but positive, and she’s smart enough to engage her audience (with tweets and constant reminders of how much she loves her “monsters”) and still always keep them guessing.

Gaga’s work shows a sense of performance-art and theater that, these days, is arguably rivaled among major artists only by that of Kanye West, which is why their ultimately cancelled “Fame Kills” co-headlining tour made sense artistically (although many were baffled by it). She makes every public appearance into an event: She “died” a bloody death at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (after arriving with her “date,” Kermit the Frog), smashed bottles over her piano at the American Music Awards, performed inside a giant gyroscope on “Saturday Night Live” and raised millions of eyebrows with the “alien disco” “American Idol” appearance that introduced her to much of the world. And her brilliant music videos evoke the eras when artists and record labels actually had big budgets to spend on them. “Poker Face” is a striking statement of intent; “Just Dance” brings the viewer into a deliciously decadent house party; and her latest, for “Bad Romance,” features super-futurist sets, semi-nudity, wild costumes and the unforgettable closing image of sparks shooting out of her breasts.

All of that and much more is what made Lady Gaga MTV News’ Woman of the Year.

Lady Gaga Is Last.fm’s Most Listened-to Artist Of 2009

What was hot online in 2009? YouTube’s most popular video of the year is Susan Boyle’s viral performance. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have all crowned Michael Jackson King of Search. Apple has declared “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas the best-selling single of the year. Now CBS-owned Last.fm has released their findings for 2009.

Lady Gaga may have shocked the world this year with her outlandish outfits and extravagant performances, but it comes as no shock that she tops Last.fm’s charts as the most listened-to artist of 2009.

Her album, The Fame, was scrobbled for a combined total of more than 18 million plays. In fact, online listeners were so gaga over Gaga that plays exceeded second-place finisher, The Killers, by more than six million scrobbles.

Paris Hilton talks new beauty products

PeopleStyleWatch.com: She’s already created a fashion empire of handbags, fragrances and hair extensions, and now Paris Hilton has a new addition to her style stable, with two more beauty products: The Celebrity Styler flat iron and Ultimate Brush.

“There are a lot of products out there that don’t work, they’re a rip-off,” the star told People Magazine at a launch event for the products at the Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills. “I wanted to make something that was affordable, that works. It’s fast, it’s easy and you don’t need a hair stylist.”

Paris’s mom Kathy weighed on on why her daughter had the perfect skill-set to be a hair care success: “She’s a hair fanatic,” Kathy explained to People. “That’s why with the Simple Life she decided to do those hair extensions, because she went crazy thinking ‘I’m going to be without a blow-dryer for four weeks!’” Sister Nicky concurred, saying, “She’s always loved experimenting with different makeup and hairstyles, so I think this product is a lot of fun for her.”

Paris Hilton faces legal action over German party snub

Paris Hilton is at the center of a legal spat in Germany after reportedly pulling out of a series of events she was scheduled to attend on Friday and Saturday.

Promoters booked the socialite to appear at a number of industry events in Frankfurt, but mysterious circumstances led to Hilton refusing to leave her hotel room in the city. She then reportedly flew to Italy early on Saturday to judge a beauty pageant, snubbing one party she was supposed to attend with Frederic Prinz von Anhalt’s adopted son Marcus.

Sources tell German newspaper Bild that Hilton pulled out of her scheduled appearances due to an argument with her boyfriend, Doug Reinhardt, suggesting the hotel heiress was instructed not to attend the Saturday night event because it was being held in an erotic table dancing club.

Michael Marx, the organizer of one party at top club Mediastar, tells the publication, “Paris Hilton has dishonored all appointments and contracts — the dinner with 18 high-ranking guests, the appearance at the bar, the autograph session at Mediastar. We are incredibly disappointed.”

Mediastar bosses are seeking legal action against Hilton and her handlers.

A spokeswoman for the socialite had not replied to WENN’s request for a comment by press time.

Paris Hilton defends herself at Miami Superior Court for lawsuit stating she didn’t do enough to promote ‘Pledge This!’ in 2006

BizJournals.com: Paris Hilton is in Miami federal court today to defend herself against an $8.5 million lawsuit that alleges she failed to promote the 2006 film she starred in, “National Lampoon’s Pledge This!”

Local attorney Michael Goldberg filed suit against Hilton and her entertainment company last year, as part of his duties in the receivership of the defunct Worldwide Entertainment Group, a former Miami Beach concert promoter accused in 2006 of bilking investors out of $300 million.

Hilton’s million-dollar contract for the movie included obligations to promote it. Her attorneys have stated in responses to the lawsuit that she did promote it, that her image was used on promotion materials and that she appeared at the movie’s debut near Chicago. They’ve said that she was not available for further promotions as requested by promoters after the film’s brief release and transition to DVD.

Hilton played a sorority president seeking to boost her image at the fictitious South Beach University.

“Hilton failed to attend any talk shows or telephonic or in-person interviews,” Goldberg alleged in the suit.

Hilton’s attorneys attempted to have the suit thrown out. The trial is expected to continue into next week.

Also on the witness list: the film’s producer Chester English; Hollywood producer Andrew Fogelson as an expert; and Hilton’s former manager Jason Moore, by deposition.

“Obligations are a red carpet appearance, no press, no after-party, and you don’t have to stay for the film. Then the film goes away,” Moore said in a Sept. 28, 2006, e-mail to Hilton regarding the premiere, according to the most recent court filing in the case.

Hilton is represented by the law firm Liner Grode Stein Yankelevitz Sunshine Regenstreif and Taylor of Los Angeles.

Goldberg is pursuing the global assets of former Worldwide Entertainment mogul Jack Utsick of Miami Beach. This comes two years after the Securities and Exchange Commission accused Utsick of securities fraud.

Worldwide Entertainment and its affiliates still have ownership interest in stadiums and concert venues.

The musician was found after a cardiac attack at his home in Los Angeles. Paramedics were unable to revive him, He died at age of 50.

A clubber who witnessed their frolicking said: “They were sucking each other’s faces off like their plane was going down[…]At one point Ronaldo had a bottle between his legs and Paris was stroking it. It was very racy.”

After sharing steamy cuddles and expensive champagne for two hours, Paris headed to sister Nicky’s home in the Hollywood Hills at 2.05 a.m.

Despite Michael Lohan’s denials, Elliot Osher, a former owner of New York’s most famous strip club Scores, insists the troubled dad made the bizarre request when he visited.

The weird request, which Osher did not give a date for, is part of a book he plans to write about many of the celeb visitors to the sexy hot spot.

“Lindsay Lohan’s father once sat down and described the kind of dancer he was looking for,” Osher insisted.

“We sent some girls over. Funny, they all seemed to look like Lindsay.

“We ended up having to show him to the door.”

Michael Lohan admits getting into an “altercation” at Scores, but insisted: “No girls danced for me.

“The last thing I’d want to see is a girl who looked like Lindsay. I don’t even look at the magazines where she’s done some risque photos.”

But Osher insisted: “Maybe he just doesn’t remember.

Osher worked at Scores for 18 years, starting out as a bouncer.

Among the anecdotes in his planned book he claims Madonna stiffed the staff, Bill Gates left a $3,500 tip, Bernie Madoff “wanted a private room” and Russell Crowe “almost got in a fight with an Irish waiter”.

Sources tell Fox411 that while the starlet poured her time and effort into her work with fashion house Emmanuel Ungaro for Paris Fashion Week, Lohan, 23, has not been paid for her work.

“Ungaro is not paying her at all to be a consultant for them,” a source close to Lohan told 411. “Her team is working to get Lindsay some form of payment from the fashion house, but right now they will only give her free clothes.”

And while the line was universally slammed by critics, the legendary fashion house seems to have made a savvy business decision in bringing Lohan on board for free.

“The deal is perfect for them – they have nothing to lose, even though the clothes were not a big hit during Paris fashion week. Lindsay even paid for her flight and hotel in Paris,” the source said.

But to add insult to injury, friends also say that Lohan recently learned that Casablanca records has decided to terminate its professional relationship with her.

“Casablanca has suspended all further recording sessions of her album and put their working relationship with her on hold. Lindsay was committed to making music and has been working on it for 16 months. She is going to go what she can to keep her music career going.”

But Lohan’s troubles could become far worse if she doesn’t find paying work soon, especially with her extravagant lifestyle taking all of her money and casting directors failing to take her seriously. Even worse, Lohan doesn’t have trustworthy people in her corner and feels that even her own mother Dina is exploiting her.

“Lindsay is not speaking to her mom and Dina is telling people Lindsay is so busy they don’t have time to talk. Their problems got worse 6 months ago when she begged her mother not to do something with the Shoe Han idea. She was embarrassed and tried to convince Dina that would only hurt her while she tried to make a comeback. Her career is at a stop and she does not have enough money coming in [to support herself.

The judge made the decision to extend probation after learning that Lohan had not completed required treatment programs because she was filming a movie out of state. Lohan’s attorney said the filming is done and that she can finish the programs.

The court appearance stems from a 2007 incident in which she crashed her car on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

She eventually agreed to a plea bargain that called for probation, time in a treatment program and community service.

But speaking of Lohan getting back on the straight and narrow, it sounds like that is a dream still far from the realm of reality. Lilo was spotted in a NYC restaurant late night last Thursday looking like a hot mess, literally.

When she pulled out plastic to pay the bill on a pile of new clothes, observers immediately took notice. Hey, maybe she really isn’t hurting for money.

Much has been made of rumors that Lindsay is desperate for work after being turned down for a teen-aged film role. Producers think she is “too jaded” for the part. The movie, based on the novel “Undiscovered Gyrl,” is about a teen blogger, who over-reveals about her sexual coming-of-age.
The book’s author Allison Burnett told OK magazine she passed on the actress because of Lindsay’s troubled image. How about because she’s just too old for the role?

Then there were the lips. Is Lindsay plumping? One blogger swore her lips were fatter. Was it just the lighting, or has she been seeing a plastic surgeon in search of fake lips to go with her fake tan?

Lindsay was also spied eating a piece of pizza! Who says she’s anorexic? Although, some reports say she still looks ghastly thin.

Which could be a good thing: New York Fashion Week is on the horizon and Lindsay may just be trying to look the part like last year.

And her reed-thin body definitely helped her side-step that bicycle.

The two women arrived at the restaurant a little after 10 PM and fellow diners in the packed eatery saw the newly blonde actress wiping back her tears not long after the couple sat down.

While Lindsay was tearful, Samantha reportedly paid little attention to the starlet.

“Sam would rarely look up,” the witness said. “She just kept texting.”

At one point, Lindsay attempted to get Samantha’s attention.

“She hit her hands against the table and yelled, ‘What!’ really loud,” the source said.

Despite the emotional scene, Lindsay caught attention for another reason too.

“She looked really beautiful,” the witness added.

Lohan and Kristi Kaylor, who runs Lohan’s 6126 brand, named for Marilyn Monroe’s birthday, have created Unforgettable Prods.

The duo are developing several projects, including a TV show called “Faux Real,” described as “Entourage” for the fashion world.

There’s also a game show involving dating, tentatively called “That’s What Friends Are For” and a “docu-cause” TV show the pair will produce in conjunction with a charitable organisation.

Kaylor said they’re also in the midst of optioning a couple of books — one for film and the other for TV.

Before her career in fashion, Kaylor was senior vice president of Pacific Motion Pictures and had a producing deal with Longbow Prods. In 1999, she partnered with Jennifer Aniston for Voxxy, an online destination for girls that eventually was turned into a magazine catalogue and sold.

Lohan and Kaylor intend to weave digital media into everything they create at Unforgettable.

“We’re taking a 360-degree approach,” Kaylor said. “Lindsay is 23 years old, and she’s so plugged in to mobile media.”

Zac Efron covers Nylon Guys Magazine

Nylonmag.com: Is Zac Efron the next king of the silver screen? It may be too soon to tell, but the actor—who turns 22 next Sunday—is certainly making good start. This month sees the release of the Richard Linklater-directed Me and Orson Welles, in which Efron plays an aspiring thespian who by a series of fortunate events is thrown into the iconic director’s infamous production of Julius Caesar, which was the first Shakespeare play ever staged on Broadway. NYLON Guys went sailing with Efron in Vancouver to talk about his transition from Disney pin-up to serious actor.

On Me and Orson Welles. “It’s the first time I’ve ever watched a movie [that I’m in] and in the end I’m like, ‘OK! I didn’t check my watch once!’”

On growing up musically inclined. “I was constantly singing. I would hear things on the radio and just be able to spit them out instantly, with perfect memorization and tone. It wasn’t like I took pride in it; there was no effort. My parents were like ‘Shut up. Please stop singing. It’s annoying.’”

On whether celebrity albums are necessary. “If anyone asked themselves that, then we wouldn’t have the crap we are listening to today. If your heart’s not in it, don’t do it. And don’t do it for money. That’s my philosophy.”

On Disney fame. “I try not to look at all of it. You can’t enjoy or celebrate it; it’s not a real thing. The face on the lunchbox and shit—you can’t share that with your friends.”
